For medical and lab equipment programs, UPM also runs UL-listed flame-retardant grades. Material selection is reviewed as part of DFM before tooling is cut.

    Yes. UPM performs first pass DFM at no additional cost on every program, before tooling is cut.   • What is Design for Manufacturability (DFM)?

    Design for Manufacturability (DFM) is the engineering review process that evaluates a part design for moldability before tooling is cut. A DFM review typically covers wall thickness, draft angles, gate location, parting line, rib geometry, material selection, and cosmetic surface requirements. The goal is to identify and correct manufacturing risks — warpage, sink marks, knit lines, dimensional drift — at the design stage, when changes are inexpensive, rather than after the mold is built.

  • Does UPM support PPAP submissions?

    Yes. UPM supports PPAP Level 3 submissions as standard, which is the most common level requested by automotive and medical-device OEMs. Higher or lower submission levels are available on request based on program requirements. PPAP submissions include dimensional inspection results, material certifications, Process Flow Diagrams and Control Plans, initial process capability studies (Cpk), and production sample submission.

  • What is a First Article Inspection (FAI)?

    A First Article Inspection (FAI) is a documented verification that the first parts produced from a new tool — or after a significant process change — meet every dimensional and material requirement on the print before full production begins. UPM’s FAI process includes full dimensional inspection using CMM, 3D scanning, optical comparators, and calibrated hand tools; visual and cosmetic inspection; material verification against the approved resin spec; and engineering and quality sign-off.

  • How does UPM maintain quality during production?

    UPM maintains quality through documented machine setup sheets for every tool, locked process parameters (barrel temperature, hold pressure, cycle time), defined in-process inspection checkpoints, and Statistical Process Control (SPC) when required by contract. The in-house quality department operates independently of production. UPM’s 12-month rolling performance averages: 99.33% on-time delivery and 5.4 DPMO Sigma quality.

  • Can UPM support traceability requirements?

    Yes. Lot-level traceability is standard on every UPM program, tying each production run back to resin lot and material certifications, machine/tool/operator records, date and shift of production, and in-process inspection results.   • Who owns the tooling at UPM?

    The customer owns the tooling. Tooling ownership transfers to the customer upon payment in full. Customer-owned tooling is stored at UPM’s Baldwin Park, California facility under U.S. legal jurisdiction. There is no “hostage tooling” scenario — customers retain control of their tooling regardless of the supplier relationship.

  • What happens if there is an unpaid balance on my account?

    Under California Civil Code Sections 3051 and 3052, plastic fabricators like UPM hold a legal right (a “possessory lien”) over all customer-owned molds and patterns in our possession for any outstanding balances due for fabrication work. If an invoice remains unpaid for more than 10 days after its due date, UPM is legally authorized — after providing proper statutory notice — to sell those molds and patterns at a public auction. Auction proceeds are applied to the unpaid debt and sale costs, and any remaining balance is returned to the legal owner.

  • What happens to my tooling if I leave UPM?

    If a customer leaves UPM, as long as all outstanding invoices are paid in full, UPM will release the mold back to the customer. The standard process: the account is paid in full (including any custom materials UPM purchased), UPM sends a statement showing a $0 balance, the molds go through inspection, molds are palletized and strapped to pallets (crating is available at additional cost), and size and weight information is provided to the customer for pickup. Lead time to release tooling is 2 weeks after receipt of final payment. Molds that sit idle at UPM for 12 months or longer may be subject to storage charges.

  • How do parts ship from UPM?

    Standard terms are FOB Baldwin Park, California. UPM also accommodates customer-routed freight on request, and offers parcel shipping and LTL. UPM ships domestically and internationally with no geographic restrictions.

  • Does UPM make aerospace parts?

    UPM is not AS9100 certified and does not produce flight-critical aerospace components. UPM does support non-flight-critical aerospace work — ground support equipment, cabin interior parts, and similar components that do not require AS9100 certification. UPM has produced toilet housings used in passenger aircraft. Aerospace programs requiring AS9100 are best directed to certified aerospace molders.

  • Is UPM a fit for commodity, price-only programs?

    No. UPM is not built for commodity, high-volume, low-mix programs where piece price is the dominant decision input. UPM is structured for complex, technically demanding programs that require precision, documentation, large-tonnage capacity, or integrated turnkey scope. Commodity programs are better served by suppliers structured for that work.

  • What does UPM NOT do?

    UPM does not produce sterile medical devices, sterile fluid-path components, or Class III implantables, and does not operate an ISO 13485 cleanroom.   • How much buffer inventory can domestic production eliminate?

    Offshore programs typically carry 4–5 months of buffer inventory (on-hand plus in-transit) to cover 8–14 week production lead times and 3–5 weeks of ocean transit. UPM’s 2–3 week post-tooling lead time allows that buffer to drop to roughly one month for most programs — freeing working capital and reducing warehouse exposure. The exact reduction varies by program demand profile.

  • How is intellectual property protected at UPM?

    All UPM production runs at one facility in Baldwin Park, California, under U.S. legal jurisdiction. Tooling, drawings, and program documentation stay at UPM, and molding, finishing, assembly, and PCB integration all run in-house.
