In-house tooling services at Universal Plastic Mold (UPM) are the mold maintenance, repair, and engineering-change work UPM performs on customer production tooling at its own facility — rather than shipping molds out to a third-party tool room. UPM is a family-owned custom plastic injection molder founded in 1962 in Baldwin Park, California, where an in-house tool room operates in the same building as production. UPM maintains, repairs, and modifies the molds it runs in-house. UPM does not build new molds or offer prototyping. UPM’s tool room supports customer production tooling across four areas, led by preventive maintenance.

Preventive Maintenance (PM).

Scheduled, proactive servicing of customer molds to keep them in running condition across multi-year programs. PM is the core of UPM’s tool room work — it protects part quality, reduces the risk of emergency downtime, and extends tool life. Frequency is set per program in coordination with the customer.

Mold Repair.

Corrective work on production tooling, including welding, microwelding, CNC machining, hot runner repairs, and polishing. Repairs are performed on-site so molds do not leave the facility for routine corrective work.

Engineering Changes.

Modifications to existing customer molds to accommodate part revisions, cavity adjustments, or process improvements, evaluated and executed in the tool room.

General Mold Maintenance.

Routine upkeep that keeps tooling production-ready between runs.

The PM Program

Preventive maintenance is the most consequential tool room capability for a long-running program. A mold that runs for years without scheduled servicing accumulates wear that eventually shows up as flash, short shots, cosmetic defects, or an unplanned press stoppage mid-run — often at the worst time for the program.

UPM’s PM program addresses this proactively. Customer molds are serviced on a schedule set in collaboration with the customer, with frequency determined by the specific mold and program — cycle counts, material abrasiveness, tolerance demands, and run cadence all factor in. Because the tool room is in the same building as the presses, PM work is scheduled around production windows rather than around a third party’s shipping and queue times.

Each PM job is communicated to the customer through a formal quote letter before work begins, so cost and scope are documented per job. Proactive servicing under this model protects part quality across the life of the tool, reduces emergency downtime, and extends usable tool life — directly supporting production continuity on programs that run for years.

What UPM Does Not Do In-House

UPM’s tool room is built for maintaining, repairing, and modifying existing production tooling — not for building new tools or for specialized tool room processes outside that scope. UPM does not perform the following in-house:

Why It Matters

Most regional molders outsource tool room work to third parties. Under that model, a mold that needs maintenance or repair is crated, shipped to an outside tool room, queued behind other shops’ work, serviced out of the molder’s sight, and shipped back. That introduces four recurring costs:

How It Works

UPM’s tool room follows a defined sequence for every job:

  1. Intake. A maintenance need is identified — either through the scheduled PM program or from an issue observed in production — and the mold is routed to the tool room.
  2. Tool room evaluation. Toolmakers assess the mold, determine the required work, and define scope.
  3. Formal quote letter. UPM issues a written quote letter for the specific job, documenting scope and cost. Turnaround is quoted based on job complexity.
  4. Execution. Approved work is performed in-house — welding, microwelding, CNC machining, hot runner repair, polishing, or engineering-change modifications as required.
  5. Return to production. The serviced mold goes back into the production schedule in the same facility, without external shipping or re-receiving.
