Direct Shipping
Managing large volumes of outbound customer orders can be difficult, complex, and even intimidating to some injection molders and distribution managers, but not UPM. We offer transportation solutions to both foreign and domestic destinations.
You define the order flow: from simplest of planning parameters (single order, waves, batches, pick and pass, consolidated orders, load plan optimization), to more sophisticated functions like picking to mixed item containers, containerized freight shipments, REDI/ASN clients, floor stacking containers, inventory management, complex labeling for direct ship retailers, complex rules by client, 3PL client rules, and many more.
With our close location to the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, UPM can pick up and unload components and sub-components from overseas shipping containers. Often customers find it vastly less expensive to move their main manufacturing and assembly back to the United States, but keep the smaller sub-component manufacturing overseas. Since the smaller sub-components can fit more units in a shipping container, they have a much lower landed cost than the larger components, while the larger components and completed products achieve the lowest landed costs through lean US manufacturing by UPM. This is how we have provided many Fortune 500 customers with lower landed costs than China.
UPM molds and assembles main components into the retail packaging as desired by customers. We also can receive orders and schedule your shipments for you. By doing this, your cash flow is improved as we manufacture per the order quantity instead of guessing demand based on sales forcasts, thus eliminating large costs related to producing and storing inventory. Customers often find lead times reduced by up to 92% and never have to deal with their shipping matrix being strangled by multiple containers waiting on the water.

Just-In-Time (JIT) / KanBan Practices
UPM excels in working with JIT/Kanban fulfillment and lean manufacturing practices.
Just In Time (JIT) is an inventory strategy that strives to improve a business' return on investment by reducing in-process inventory and associated carrying costs.
To meet JIT objectives the process relies on signals (Kanban) between different points in the process, which tells production when to make the next part. When implemented correctly, JIT/Kanban can dramatically improve a manufacturing organization's return on investment, quality and efficient by substantially reducing product lead times.
In the past, a partner utilizing standard logistical and inventory strategies would typically predict demand ahead of time based on sales forecasting. Then they would manufacture and store the product in a warehouse while waiting for orders. This is unnecessary, inefficient, slow, and wasteful due to the cash flow losses from to the production of excess inventory, not to mention the additional carrying costs that eat away at profit margins.
At UPM we typically tune our lean manufacturing processes so that a partner can forward orders to us on a Monday, for example, and have the order manufactured, assembled, packaged, and shipped out to the customer by the same Thursday. This decreases order lead time from 8-10 weeks overseas to just 1 week, while lowering costs and allowing the company to maintain healthier cash flow and and thrive despite volatile market conditions.
